Busy time for Eden Square as Christmas approaches

Busy time for Eden Square as Christmas approaches

There has been a plethora of activity at Eden Square in the run-up to the festive period, including several new retail lettings, the first set of residents moving in and the planting of three new trees.

The redevelopment of the shopping centre, which is being undertaken by Ask Developments in partnership with Trafford Council, has made excellent progress this year, with the first phase opening in June, including the Sainsbury’s superstore, a brand new 460 space shoppers’ car park and the public library. Costa Coffee and Boots opened shortly afterwards.

Several national retailers have made Eden Square their new home in the last few weeks, with card retailer Hallmark and confectioner Thorntons now open adjacent to  Sainsbury’s and national bakery chain Greggs the next shop in line to open its doors. HD Studio hairdressers will be open for business prior to Christmas and Ask are in discussions with several other national and local retailers regarding the remaining available units.

In terms of Phase 2 of the scheme, Ask Developments and Trafford Council are still committed to bringing this phase forward, when market conditions allow. In the interim, the remaining two units from the old shopping centre are to be demolished and the Council and Ask are discussing the temporary treatment of the then cleared Phase 2 land.

In addition to the commercial momentum at the scheme, a number of residents have now moved in to their Eden Square apartments. Over 30% of sales have now completed with local couple Robert and Sheila Heggs the first to move in. The Heggs have lived in Urmston for many years and bought their apartment at Eden Square following the sale of their home in the town. All 64 apartments have now been completed and purchaser completions are set to continue over the coming months.

To add to the overall look of the public realm, three English Oaks have been planted in time for Christmas, with the lights being switched-on on November 27 and Father Christmas dropping in between 3.30and 5pm. In the Main Square, an English Oak tree  has been planted, while in the Mall, a further two English Oak trees  have also been installed.

Adding to the festive spirit, special effects lighting will feature in the Square during the run-up to Christmas, and Christmas trees and seasonal wreaths will be on sale from 21 November until Christmas Eve.

Leon Guyett at Ask Developments said: “There has been a wealth of activity at Eden Square in recent months and the scheme has a real atmosphere to it now. We’re delighted to welcome Hallmark, Thorntons, Greggs and HD Studio to the scheme as well as the new residents who have moved into their apartments.

“The trees are a welcome addition to the public realm and we’re confident that Eden Square will have a real festive feel to it over the next month.”

Executive Councillor Mike Cornes said: “I am delighted to see such a good range of retailers committing to Eden Square. It is great to see the square taking shape and becoming a hub of activity in the run up to Christmas.”
