A former postgraduate from Salford University has seen his art installation Seefront realised within the atrium of Abito Salford Quays, in time for the arrival of the building's first residents.
Manchester-based developers Ask Life offered Craig Need the chance to create a piece of artwork that captures the ethos behind Abito's unique residential scheme. Seefront is a result of Craig's winning entry in a competition held in 2006 by Abito and the University of Salford, when Craig successfully completed his MA in Contemporary Fine Art.
Craig, who originates from Rochdale, is no stranger to seeing his work exhibited throughout the region, having previously undertaken commissions from Tameside Partnerships and Salford Council. He is currently working on Chromium Skip, a project with Gallery Oldham that focuses on the town's architecture and will be exhibited in the summer of 2009.
Seefront is a mathematical concept which looks at mulit-perspective views and is made up of 36 aluminium panels, which reflect the 36 apartments on each storey. These are suspended over nine floors and give each owner a token piece of the installation, created from the unique views from the building centre to their particular front door.
Craig said: "I wanted to create something that would give each occupier their own bespoke element, whilst retaining a continual flow, highlighting the building's sequential rhythm. When either stepping out of their front door, or ascending the front staircase, residents can look both up and down to see a combination of colour and shape from all angles. All of which has been carefully calculated with BDP to ensure Seefront's potential is fully maximised".
Abito Salford Quays is the second Abito completed by Ask Life following on from the success of the award-winning Abito in Greengate, Manchester. Architects BDP have taken the successful formula and evolved the design concept both externally and within the pods.
